The island of Kaprije (Caprice) is located in the middle of the Šibenik archipelago and it covers an area of 9.67 square kilometres. It was named after a Mediterranean plant called caper which buds are used as a condiment. The inhabited place is surrounded by hills, the highest of which is the Velika Glavica located on 132 metres height above sea level. The island is densely vegetated, with grass and macchia (evergreen underbrush) prevailing, and with pinewoods scattered around. At the foot of the hills some cultivable land is located on which people grow mostly wine grape and olive-trees. Along with agriculture, the residents of Kaprije are also known as excellent fishermen and seamen, and recently as very hospitable householders.

In 14th and 15th century the island belonged to the Šibenik aristocrats. In 16th and 17th century, when Turks invaded this area, Kaprije was inhabited by the refugees from the mainland, which later on, when Turks retreated, moved away. At that time the Saint Peter’s church was built and in 1801. was enlarged.

Otok Kaprije

Naturally sheltered from all winds, on the NW side of the island the Kaprije port provides safe haven to numerous yachts and navigation experts who wish to rest and taste folk-specialities. Due to very good ship lanes with Šibenik, apart from navigation experts, the island of Kaprije attracts more and more excursionists and tourists offering its beauty, sea abundant in fish and hidden coves. Along with private accommodation, any native will offer you a room in his/her family house.

Otok Kaprije

Kaprije is one of the most beautiful islands in the Šibenik archipelago. When you are there, you are separated from Italy by only one island, and from everyday stress and commotion by beautiful nature and crystal clear sea. You are welcomed to discover your own peace of mind and shelter on this island just like numerous sailboats glide slowly in the dusk looking for a safe harbour and decorating the cove with its lights. And when you are awoken with the first ray of lights on a dead calm sea, rejoice with seagulls that are awaiting fishermen and fruits of their hard labour. Cars don’t have access on the island and must stay parked on the mainland.

Our house on Kaprije contains two very well equipped apartments distant only 20 metres from the sea and it has a private little beach with concrete steps to ease your entering the sea. The house is surrounded with green olive-trees and other Mediterranean plants and each apartment have its own balcony that surrounds it and gives an unobstructed view of the sea and the Kaprije port.
